Let’s Talk About That Toxic Trio: Perfectionism, Procrastination, and Self-Sabotage

If you’re a creative entrepreneur, chances are you’ve wrestled with the trio of self-sabotage, procrastination, and perfectionism. If you've ever delayed launching your passion project because it "isn't ready yet," or found yourself stuck in a cycle of second-guessing every decision, you're in good company. But here's the twist—fear isn’t your enemy. In fact, it can be your greatest ally in cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset and embracing self-improvement.

Let’s dive into how these patterns are connected and, more importantly, how to break free.

The Connection Between Perfectionism, Procrastination, and Self-Sabotage

Perfectionism often stems from the fear that you’ll mess up and everyone will see it. The result? You stay stuck in an endless loop of “almost ready” while your big dreams gather dust. The problem is, that perfectionism isn’t about high standards—it’s about avoiding criticism or rejection.

Fear of failure? It’s really procrastination, the sneaky voice saying, “Don’t even try—what if you crash and burn?” But here’s the truth: failure isn’t the opposite of success; it’s part of the journey.

You can break free from self-sabotage: the subconscious behaviors that keep you stuck. Whether it’s scrolling endlessly on social media, overthinking your ideas, or convincing yourself you need more preparation, self-sabotage thrives on perfectionism and procrastination when you lean into fear and use it as fuel.

Fear becomes a sign that you’re doing something brave and meaningful. And perfectionism? It’s just a speed bump, not a roadblock.

From Fear to Fuel: Adopting an Entrepreneurial Mindset

  1. Acknowledge the Fear
Fear isn’t the enemy—it’s a signal you’re stepping into something meaningful. Instead of resisting it, ask, “What’s the worst-case scenario, and how can I handle it?”

  2. Address the Inner Critic
Self-sabotage often stems from a negative inner voice. Combat it by reframing failure as feedback and reminding yourself that every misstep is a step forward.

  3. Embrace Progress Over Perfection
Perfection is an illusion and perfectionism is a waste of energy. Shift your focus to improvement, learning, and growth. Celebrate the messy, imperfect wins—they’re proof you’re taking action.

  4. Find Accountability
Whether it’s a trusted friend, coach, or community, having someone to hold you accountable can make a world of difference. Share your goals and progress regularly to stay on track.

My Story: Dropping Self-Sabotage and Using Fear as a Tool for Growth

Fear and I have a long history.

  • In 2012, I launched a blog, even though fear whispered, “Who are you to do this?” That blog became my creative playground.
  • In 2016, I published Blossom’s Wine Bar, a poetry collection. Fear screamed, “No one will read it.” Turns out, they did—and it healed me in ways I never expected.
  • In 2020, I founded Journaling is Self-Care LLC during a pandemic. Fear roared, but I leaned into it, and it became a turning point in my life.

These are just a few examples. Choosing scary goals and experiences has become a self-empowerment practice for me. Each time I take action despite fear, I grow stronger, more resilient, and more aligned with my purpose.
